How we helped an Investment Banking client to create a global scoring system that ranks countries based on their performance across Macroeconomic, Political, and Sustainability metrics

March 31, 2023

The Context

The client, an Investment Banking firm wanted the TresVista team to assist with a global scoring system that ranks countries based on their performance across Macroeconomic, Political, and Sustainability metrics. The aim was for the tracker to complement projects the company has invested in or ones that they would potentially invest in to understand the current scenario and longer-term outlook of the country.

The Objective

To create a global scoring system that ranks countries based on their performance across Macroeconomic, Political, and Sustainability metrics.

The Approach

The TresVista team followed the following process:
• Conducted research on data collected by organizations such as World Bank, the UN, and the IMF to understand their methodology and calculations
• Created a database of relevant indicators segregated into four dimensions: Macroeconomic, Governance, Environmental, and Social
• Determined the most appropriate indicators create a cumulative score for each of the four dimensions and an overall score
• Created dynamic dashboards to visualize the results and assist the client in qualitative analysis

The Challenges We Overcame

The major hurdle faced by the TresVista team was comparing multiple indicators to ensure reliability and consistency to avoid deviations in the data reported. Further, the team also struggled with manipulating the data to fill the missing figures and gaps in historical values by studying the methodology used to derive the indicators, which was done as per the client’s requirement, and it was difficult to stay up to date with new data releases by different organizations and sharing the same with the client. There was also a delay in how a country’s situation is portrayed in the tracker due to the delay in data collection from relevant organizations.

The Value Add – Catalyzing the Client’s Impact

The TresVista team provided their inputs in determining the weights provided to different indicators and developed a template that can be updated periodically in an efficient manner in the future. The team also ensured the dashboard is dynamic so that the client can view a piece of the data based on their selection.
